The Adur Indoor Bowling Club resulted from a vision in 1984 by members of the outdoor bowling clubs within the Shoreham and Southwick area for the ability to bowl all year round.
To achieve this objective a committee was formed from the outdoor club’s membership.
The local council was approached and proved to be very interested in this new venture eventually provided the site where the club is today in Southwick’s recreation ground with a 99-year lease. The council also proved great financial support by providing the club with a grant of £125,000, leaving the newly formed committee to find the remaining £210,000 that was required.
The club’s first Company Secretary, Alban Morgan, took the lead, and obtained a loan from the local branch of the Nat West Bank. However, they required significant collateral to cover the loan.
This resulted in five members of the newly formed club to become guarantors, and thus with their financial support enabled the building work to commence in 1989, with completion being achieved in June 1990, when the club formally opened.
Significant refurbishment that was carried out in 2007 have ensured that we are now considered, with our 8 rinks, to be the best club in the South with a membership of some 650, that can boast of a number of England Internationals within the club’s members.
